Equipped with the engine from the Jaguar E-Type, the XJ12, introduced in 1972, was one of the few luxury saloons with a 12-cylinder engine for a long time. BMW and Mercedes, for example, did not offer this until 1987 and 1991 respectively. This made the XJ12 Jaguar's flagship model and, with 295 hp in the most powerful engine version, one of the fastest production saloons ever.

The XJ12 is still considered a relatively affordable model in the classic luxury class which was the fastest four-seat production car of this time.
